Message from Marilou Diaz-Abaya, December 20, 2008

Dear Friends,

Season’s Greetings!

In its second year of mentoring students, MDAFI is proud to congratulate some of our outstanding alumnae who have made their mark in both the indie and mainstream cinemas. To name a few awardees: Directors CATHY MOLINA (“One More Chance”) , TARA ILLENBERGER (“Brutus), and MIC RED (“The Threshold,” and “Kamera”); Cinematographer DAN VILLEGAS (“Huling Pasada”). Collectively, their works have been exhibited locally and internationally, and acclaimed by both film critics and public audiences.

Our instructors are at the forefront of several departments in the motion picture industries, among them : Directors MARK MEILY and RAYMOND RED; Writer CHRIS VALLEZ; Director and Cinematographer MO ZEE; Cinematographer and Colorist DAVE ABAYA; Cinematographer LEE MEILY; Actors JOHNNY DELGADO. LAURICE GUILLEN AND NONIE BUENCAMINO; Production Designers CRIS SILVA and MIC TATAD; Editors TARA ILLENBERGER and JAVIER ABOLA; Film Scorer NONONG BUENCAMINO; Sound Engineer MIKE IDIOMA; and Opticolor Post Production Producer MARK AMBAT.

Members of the MDAFI community are sought-after by indie as well as mainstream producers. Why? Because they are skilled and disciplined in the observance of professional protocols and procedures in filmmaking. They are reliable. Above all, they are cinematic storytellers.

The best strategy for longevity in filmmaking is to obtain both a solid film education AND a wealth of experiences in today’s multi-media. To learn the “mother tongue” of the FEATURE FILM NARRATIVE is to facilitate success in the other vocabularies of advertising, documentaries, music videos, corporate videos,
educational videos, and television productions.

Every filmmaker should aspire to be exhibited in as many venues as possible, from
cineplexes, to youtube. BIG SCREENS, though, continue to project a special, magical appeal, the reason it’s worth learning film craftsmanship through a comprehensive program of academic discipline and practical skills-training.

We are happy to announce that the MARILOU DIAZ- ABAYA FILM INSTITUTE AND ARTS CENTER is now accepting applications for enrollment to our SUMMER FILM COURSES 2009 and the BASIC COURSE in the MOTION PICTURE LANGUAGE AND PRODUCTION which starts in June 2009. Do visit our web site www.mdafilm.com. Starting next year, 2009, we will be offering a wider range of options for easier payments of tuition fees. And you’re most welcome to arrange a visit to our main campus on Mil Flores corner Third Avenue, Beverly Hills Subdivision, Antipolo City.

Consistent with our advocacy for quality film education, and, in particular, from an Asian perspective, the Institute provides academic and skills training programs to empower new filmmakers to meet the demands of new times. That cinema is better learned and taught in the greater context of the arts and humanities is the concept upon which we anchor our core curriculum. Thus, we offer a well-rounded program to obtain for our students a deeper understanding and application of the dynamic rapport between cinema and life.

Among our special presentations this year, 2008:

• The premiere of “ELEGIE” (May 17, 2008), a feature film on video by Director Mo Zee
• “TWENTY QUESTIONS” (May 30, 2008), Palanca award- winning play written and directed by Chris Vallez
• ASIAN POETRY READINGS (May 30, 2008) by Marilou Diaz-Abaya and Nonie Buencamino
• CAREWELL DOCUMENTARY ON CANCER SURVIVORS (October 2, 2008), written, produced and directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya
• ARTS FOR PEACE SYMPOSIUM (October 25, 2008) with presentations by Rev. Fr. Rene Javellana, S.J. (Christian Arts) and Dr. Abraham Sakili, Ph.D. (Islamic Arts)
• The Tenth Anniversary (December 20, 2008) of the movie “JOSE RIZAL”, directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya
• Exhibition of selected short films by MDAFI students (December 20, 2008)

The science, art, and business of filmmaking constitute our three-point agenda of learning, with the end in view for our students to make Asian films for the world. We are primarily a school for Writing-Producing-DIRECTORS who, from the MDAFI environment, will hopefully develop their own community of filmmakers with whom they can share lasting career-vocations in motion pictures.

In these exciting times of “multi-technologies” when visual storytellers and their entertainment audiences enjoy nearly limitless options to making and viewing significant human experiences, a much higher level of excellence in motion pictures is demanded by a
more discriminating public, especially a paying public. For this reason, filmmakers are challenged to be better educated, better skilled, and better prepared for the variety of ways by which they can be appreciated.

As Director of Studies, I am looking forward to mentoring our next batch of students in collaboration with my co-faculty members who are, as I am, passionate about teaching as a vocation. Our individual and collective resumes reflect our academic and professional credentials. In addition to our regular instructors and drill masters, eminent guest lecturers from the academe, motion picture producers, and film craftsmen provide specialized courses in art history, social communications, computer generated effects, laboratory procedures, finance management, promotions, marketing and distribution.

I believe that film education has more to do with WHO teach and learn, rather than what
equipment they use. New technologies come and go, but human talent and experiences, shared and received systematically and with much feeling, are the best instruments of learning.

Learn from both masters and rookies. Invest in a film and arts education at MDAFI, then spend a lifetime working in borderless film sets!

With thanks and appreciation, we send you our warmest regards and best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Peaceful, Fruitful New Year!
